Cristόbal Balenciaga

Cristόbal Balenciaga  was a Spanish fashion designer, born in the Bosque Province in 1895.

Balenciaga was a successful designer from the early years of his career. At first he opened a boutique in San Sebastian and soon after in Madrid and Barcelona.

When the Spanish Civil War exploded he closed his stores in Spain moved to Paris where he worked for the next thirty years.

He closed the Balenciaga house - in France and in Spain in 1968

After that he taught fashion design classes and Oscar de la Renta,
Emanuel Ungaro, Andre Courreges, Hubert de Givenchy had been Balenciaga's apprentices.

He died in Spain in 1972.

Balenciaga was a strong personality, a very private man - he only gave a few interviews during his life - often called the 'designer's designer'. In 1960 he created the sack dress, so mach copied by other designers.
